$20 Saint-Gaudens Gold

The designer of this $20 gold piece is Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Whether you are a coin collector or investor looking for long-term growth potential, the unmatched beauty and rich history the Saint-Gaudens double eagle offer a profitable future investment.

In an effort to embellish the nation's more standard coin designs, President Teddy Roosevelt called for coins to rival those of Rome and Ancient Greece. The president requested his good friend, the renowned sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to design this beautiful coin.

Considered to be the most beautiful coin in America, the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle $20 gold piece has a rich history. Pres. Roosevelt omitted the motto "In God We Trust" because he thought the Lords name should not appear on coins used for transactions in brothels, saloons and gambling halls. Many members of congress disagreed and the next year the motto was added.

The coin was minted till a halt in circulation due to the Confiscation Act of 1933. This sealed the fate of almost 99% of all gold coins in circulation and they were turned in, melted into bars and sent to Fort Knox. The largest holdings wound up in Switzerland to be saved from melt down and WWII. Germany purchased the coins for US dollars to use for bullion storage and wealthy bankers in Europe continued to hoard the remaining stock.

Today there is speculation that fewer than 300,000 are left in existence. Most of these coins have become graded by PCGS or NGC MS 61/67 and sold to collectors throughout the World. The remainder of these “investment grade” coins have been deemed to be non confiscatable and non reportable, and offer privacy and long term market growth. Collections are said to be more valuable with diversified dates and mint marks. It’s destined to remain Americas most classic gold piece.
