LIBERTY DOUBLE EAGLE 1849-1867 NO MOTTO TYPE 1 The gold discovery in California in 1848 and the following Gold Rush turned out to be a present from God to coin collectors. The overflow of gold that started to pour into Philadelphia, Congress authorized on March 3, 1849 the United States Mint to create a $20 gold coin. Initially the coin was issued without a motto. The pictured coin was minted in 1850.
